My reading has continued but I am one book behind my goal for 40 books in 2025. Well Sexy Sadie, I need to find some shorter novels...Here are the latest five books I have read.
C is for Corpse (#16)
Written by Sue Grafton; published in 1986; 243 pages; BJ Score 2.0 (Good)
This is the third book in Grafton's Alphabet Mystery series. She wrote through the letter Y before she passed away. My book list had the whole series as an entry, so each time I read another "letter", I just update the same entry. I got this from the library which contained the first three novels, so I read all three. It was good story about PI Kinsey Millhone.
Persuasion (#17)
Written by Jane Austen; published in 1817; 250 pages; BJ Score 3.0 (Great)
This became book #78 on my bucket list and it was #35 on the original 100 Books to read. This book was enjoyable and gives a great overview of life in England in the early 1800s. I am glad I did not live in that era, where you knew your station in life and did not stray too far from your own class. This was the fourth Jane Austen book I have read.
Endymion (#18)
Written by Dan Simmons; published in 1996; 563 pages; BJ Score 3.0 (Great)
It appears a lot of authors like to write a series of novels. Dan Simmons has the Hyperion Cantos series, which is four novels. This was the third book in the series. I enjoy the universe he has created and this book was probably mu favorite of the three so far. I bought this in paperback, and I also bought the fourth book which I plan to read later.
Papillon (#19)
Written by Henri Charriere; published in 1969; 560 pages; BJ Score 4.0 (Excellent)
Book #79 from list and it was not on my original list. I had seen the 1973 movie a few times with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, and I really enjoyed the book. I think the author Henri had a tendency to always make himself look better than things probably were, but it was entertaining. His incarceration was from 1931-1945. He became a citizen of Venezuela.
Never Flinch (#20)
Written by Stephen King; published in 2025; 448 pages; BJ Score 3.5 (Great to Excellent)
The latest novel from one of my favorite modern day authors, Stephen King. He has a character named Holly Gibney, who first appeared as a minor character in the Bill Hodges Trilogy. King liked the character so much he has written four new novels where Holly is one of the main characters. These books include: The Outsider, If It Bleeds, Holly and Never Flinch. I have read all four. There probably will be more. I will probably read them.
About Title
"Sexy Sadie" is a song by the English rock group the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). The song was written by John Lennon in India and credited to Lennon–McCartney. Lennon wrote the song during the Beatles' stay in India in response to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's alleged sexual advance on actress Mia Farrow. The song has been considered an early example of a diss track.
Lennon once said of the song: "That was inspired by Maharishi. I wrote it when we had our bags packed and were leaving. It was the last piece I wrote before I left India. I just called him 'Sexy Sadie' instead of (sings) 'Maharishi what have you done, you made a fool...' I was just using the situation to write a song, rather calculatingly but also to express what I felt. I was leaving the Maharishi with a bad taste. You know, it seems that my partings are always not as nice as I'd like them to be." He told Rolling Stone that when the Maharishi asked why he was leaving, he replied, "Well, if you're so cosmic, you'll know why."
