More about Family Tree

After my last post, a friend of mine asked why I did not include any family tree information. He suggested pictures of the trees and such. It did get me thinking, and I realized I could share some of that information. I use Family Tree Maker and my current tree has 2,704 people in it. Printed that as a tree takes hundreds of pages, that I am not going to share. But I will share some of the information.

If you ever start a tree, you have to know who are you going to include. I decided early on that I was more interested in my ancestry and bloodline, and not so much who my third, fourth and fifth cousins are. I guess you could put the whole world into your tree, but it is hard enough to get information on direct relatives.

This page includes five generations. I actually ran the report for nine generations, and that is why there are continuation numbers on the right. Those pages would have the person repeated with the next four generations. That is a lot of information to fill; the ninth generation would have 256 people to fill in. As you can see, I have my two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and only 13 of 16 of my great-great-grandparents. The data that is included in the reports can be changed. I could just include dates and not places. Very powerful and adaptable.

As I have spent years working on this off and on, you can see my standards have changed on how I enter places. Originally, all places had to be typed in by hand. In later versions of the software, they added a lookup for places. You can see I have "Winooski, Vermont" in one place, but then I started to use the format of City/Town, County, State, and Country. Looks like I need to go and do some updating of the information already entered.

There are many charts, but they also have text reports which can be generated. Here is the Descendant list for Paul Provoncha, my great-great-grandfather. I only included one generation and I highlighted the people that were in photos from the last post.

I am planning to connect photos to the people in the tree. I am not sure if I like how they do it so I may have to get a newer version of the program to see if things have been improved. First I need to finish scanning all the photos.

One other thing I started to think about. We call people Uncles and Aunts whether they are blood relatives or not. I read that some languages do have separate terms and some go so far to distinguish whether it is from your father or mother. For us in English, we say Aunt for the sister of a parent, or the wife of an Uncle (who is the brother of a parent). I started to distinguish my cousins as Paternal or Maternal, I guess I could do that for Uncles and Aunts.

We do distinguish the spouses family by adding "in-law" to the end. Mother-in-law, Sister-in-law. It literally means they have become in the eyes of the law your sibling or parent. Maybe an aunt who marries your uncle could be an aunt-in-law. To make things worse, in America we have a habit of calling people from the parent's generation an uncle or aunt, even without marriage. BTW, I say aunt and "ant".  I know some people only say "ant".
